Top 20 Fire Prevention Tips
- Mount fire extinguishers on every level of your home.
- Make sure to keep a fire extinguisher close to the Kitchen (Where most fires start).
- Install smoke alarms on every level. (66% of children sleep through standard alarms so make sure they get their attention.)
- Test your smoke alarms regularly and change batteries at least once a year.
- Install a carbon monoxide detector near your bedrooms.
- Store in your child's bedroom a fire safety blanket. It can shield your child during an escape, or even extinguish a small fire.
- Only light candles when you're in the room to supervise.
- Make sure you keep all flammables away from fireplaces, space heaters, and lamps.
- Learn CPR and first aid.
- If you have a multi-story dwelling, get a fire ladder and practice using it.
- Avoid overloading wall sockets.
- Cover unused electrical outlets with outlet covers.
- Have your chimney cleaned every year.
- Examine electrical cords regularly and replace frayed or worn corns. Loose cords are hazardous.
- Don't use extension cords permanently.
- Make sure to keep your outside grill at least three feet away from the side of the house.
- Turn the dryer off when you leave the house and clean the lint screen each time you use it.
- To prevent overheating use the correct bulbs in fixtures.
- After each use unplug appliances (such as coffee makers) .
- Kitchen and bathroom outlets need to be protected Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters.
